Christopher Nolan reveals that not even he knew just how famous Harry Styles was before casting him in the highly anticipated summer blockbuster, Dunkirk.
Buuut he’s a pretty busy guy, so we’re letting it slide.
Harry Styles will make his acting debut this month in Dunkirk, the story of the evacuation of Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk, France during World War II. While hearing the news of his casting sparked heartbeats around the world, director Christopher Nolan actually didn’t quite understand the level of Harry’s fame, and reveals that it really came down to his potential as an actor. Entertainment Weekly reports that Nolan had really only heard about Harry thanks to his kids, saying QUOTE
“I don’t think I was that aware really of how famous Harry was. I mean, my daughter had talked about him, but I wasn’t really aware of it. So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table.”
And for fellow Dunkirk star, Mark Rylance, acting alongside Harry earned him a few ‘cool uncle’ points. In an interview with Billboard, Rylance revealed that his niece QUOTE “was just more excited than anything I’ve ever done because I was going to be acting with Harry Styles. I went up in her estimation. I won the Harry!”
But being the talked about so much comes with a lot of pressure and even Harry shared that, at first, being on set a major production was nothing short of overwhelming, telling EW QUOTE “I think whatever you imagine king of a gant film set to be like, this was very ambitious by even those standards. But luckily, all that talk was something that Christopher Nolan knows a thing or two about. The director told Enterteinment Tonight that casting Harry took him way back to Dark Knight days, saying QUOTE “When I cast Heath Ledger as the Joker [in The Dark Knight], it raised a lot of eyebrows and caused a lot of comment. I have to trust my instincts, and Harry was perfect for this part.”
And the feeling is mutual. In fact, Harry’s former bandmates feel the same way too. Harry told Entertaiment Tonight QUOTE “They are big fans of Chris, too, and I think they’re excited to see it.”
We won’t know until we see it, but we also know that Christopher Nolan knows what he’s doing, so can it be July 20th yet or what? After Dunkirk premieres, it won’t be long before Harry heads out on his solo tour, so this is only the beginning of what is sure to be a major year for him.
